Another blogger just threw out the suggestion that I look into freelancing on the client side. I don’t know why I never thought of it, but it’s genius.
I feel like I just opened up my income options by 500%.
Erik, one of the things that I love about you is your ability to truly be “creative” outside of the comfy confines of advertising. One example is this idea to freelance client-side. Another is this very intrepid idea to chronicle life as the recently unemployed. You’re brilliant. Bravo!
Pete, that thought crossed my mind. It would certainly open this up to a much wider audience. But in terms of expert advice, I am really just an authority on navigating unemployment for adfolk. Ideas like going client side or partnering with other unemployed writers and art directors during down times (entry coming on this topic later today) are really only relevant to one industry. I think I can be more help if I stay specialized. At least for the time being.
Ok, ok. It just seems like such a big idea, especially with a growing national and world population of “recently unemployed.” I was seeing it more as a pop culture phenomenon than a expert blog. It’s great either way.
First great site. Where was it when I was unemployed? I could’ve used it. Mine lasted 3 months and I was as distraught as could be. Even applied to work at the Gap, Banana Republic and all I got was – “Aren’t you a little overqualified for this.”
Client-side is the best place to be at least they do the firing of agencies. But be forwarned – its tight as you are aware. Make sure you find a unique way to stand out. Don’t go by book and resume alone. Make something additional that places you above similar creative types who have stumbled on to the same idea.
FYI – I am in account. Landed at an Indie shop in Philly. They seem to be winning biz hand over fist. What do they got the big shops don’t?

Great idea. Killer in fact. Now, shut it down and start over.

A Blog For The Recently Unemployed
Just my two cents, but open it up to the world, not just adfolk. Yes?
