The very first thing on any recently unemployed person’s agenda should be to file for unemployment. The government, believe it or not, is there to help. Depending on what state you live in, how much you made, and what your working-stiff lifestyle was like, unemployment benefits might even be enough to maintain a shoestring existence (in MA, the max is 50% of your salary up to $600/week).
The only problem is, there are SO many of us that I have been unable to get through their telefile system. I’ve called 3 times a day since the day I was laid off (going on two weeks now), and have been unable to get someone to take my claim “due to unusually high call volume.”
How’s that for rubbing salt on the wound?
