Newspaper Publisher Lays Off Entire Staff…But Just For A Week

I preach that laying people off should be a tactic of last resort. That companies – even public ones – should go out of their way to avoid the mass jobocide that is plaguing our economy. Well, The Gannett Company is at least trying. They’re giving all 31,000 US employees a one week, unpaid leave. This includes Craig A. Dubow, their chairman, president and chief executive officer.

Can you picture Omnicom doing something like this? Oh, right. They didn’t. Instead, they laid off thousands while their CEO John Wren got $25 million in bonus options for his bang up leadership.

Thank you, Gannett. Hopefully this works. And hopefully, other financially troubled media companies follow your lead. Giving people a week of unpaid leave isn’t ideal. But I think I speak for just about everybody when I say that it’s better than the popular alternative.
