Meet my friend Brad Kayal.
Brad recently got job two job offers – one from Goodby and another from Venables Bell. As you can probably guess by now, Brad is good. Not just good, relentless. And not just relentless at advertising, but relentless at everything he does.
Brad is what you might call a renaissance creative. When he’s not making ads, he’s making video games. When he’s not making video games, he’s making music. When he’s not making music, he’s making you feel lucky to know him.
Yup, Brad is even relentless at being nice.
So, want a job offer? How about two job offers? In this economy, you’ll need more than just a great book, a proven track record or impeccable references. Those things are assumed, and without them I’m sorry to say your prospects are non-existent.
To see Brad-like success – to have your pick of job offers instead of praying for the phone to ring – you’ll need to be killer. And at a lot more than just advertising.

Funny, I heard that this is the opposite of how it used to be. You were supposed to be 100% Advertising.
I heard people used to hide scripts in drawers & work on them after everyone went home or if they painted to keep it to themselves.
Now we have to be curious, well rounded and inventive. Damn!
Yeah, advertising isn’t just advertising any more. The opportunities to communicate can come from just about anywhere these days – not just the standard checklist of media. So you’ve got to be well rounded beyond just the ad world.
Good for Brad that he has offers from such great shops. Glad to see that there are some people truly doing well in today’s economy.
Yay Brad! You put the Rad in Brad.
Brad is the BOMB. I consider myself lucky to know him and to have worked with him.
I think the fact that you have to be well-rounded to succeed in advertising is also due to the fact that ‘advertising’ is not what it used to be. No longer print/tv/radio…You have to ‘communicate’ wherever people are — and people are everywhere…so you have to be there too. I don’t know Brad, but it sounds like he has mastered this.
I think the extracurricular creative passions are an asset if you’ve also demonstrated your talent and passion for advertising. From looking at his book, Mr. Kayal clearly has talent and passion for advertising and design.
Most of the creatives I’ve known have other creative passions along with advertising, but most are too shy or self-loathing to actually put them out there. Maybe we shouldn’t be so hesitant.
Impressive portfolio. Range + Restraint. Congrats to him.
*Sigh*
I wish we all could be Brad.
Nice Art Direction. After 10 years in the biz he should have some film or at least start making some.
