I’m on Virgin America right now, heading to San Francisco to sit on an ASPP Panel called “Ready For Reinvention?” The map on the Red console in front of me tells me we are traveling at 466 mph over upstate New York.
This trip marks a couple of firsts for me. The first first is that someone cares enough about my opinion to fly me across the country as an “expert panelist.” Me, the guy who lost his job a year ago. Me, the guy who always wanted to be behind the curtain of advertising, churning out television and print ads for the chance at momentary celebrity.
The second first is that I will be showing Lemonade to a group of people who were in no way involved in its production. In advertising terms, this is a focus group. It’s a big test to see if it’s as good as I hope it is. Everyone who’s seen Lemonade so far has had some vested interest in it. The producers, director, my wife, editors, cameramen, advisers…these are all people for whom impartiality is impossible.
I hope it’s a hit. But I hope even more that people walk away with an understanding of Lemonade’s intent: that losing your job can be devastating. But with the right perspective and a work ethic, it can also be the single greatest moment of your career.

I think it was a hit if a long standing ovation means anything.
Thank you, Erik!
I was in the “focus group” at the ASPP meeting in San Francisco and got to see “Lemonade.” I look forward to promoting it. First the criticism: I thought some scenes could be a little shorter…
Otherwise, it hit the mark (!); There is a story arc. There are themes from multiple views (“How I got the word I was let go” segment as an example.”)
I think this work should be sent to the US Dept. of Labor, and to our reps in Congress. Job-hunting organizations should have this in their “library” or show it to new members. There is life after job-loss. Maybe even a better one.
Thanks Erik.
I think saying it was a “hit” is an understatement. I was a panelist with Eric today at the ASPP event and was blown away by the movie. One of the most inspiring movies/documentaries I have ever seen. I cannot wait for the rest of the world to see it and be as inspired as all of us were.
Thank you for the work you are doing.
