This one really hits close to home. I was a copywriter in the Detroit market who got laid off last fall from my agency (after 12 years). It got to the point where I had to sell my home this summer (after all, I was living in Michigan) at a huge loss so I could have the mobility to move wherever I could find a job. Still looking, trying to find work where I can still write (not necessarily in advertising). The Detroit ad community will survive, but it's going to be a lot smaller and weaker. Unfortunately, a lot of us that were in the middle in terms of the agency hierarchy are the collateral damage of this economic mess. I'll keep plugging away. I hope people who are fans of this site do the same.

Erik: I'm touched by what I've seen of Lemonade and the spirit behind it. One of the reasons I've continued to teach advertising is that I firmly believe the best skills we offer and the best people we offer to the profession are optimistic, forward-thinking, and brave. I see that in your film.
Bravo! And if we can do anything in Eugene or Portland, please let me know.
Best...deb morrison, uoregon

Hey Erik,

I was wondering if you might be convinced to do a post going more into detail about the quote:

"…advertising is one of thew few careers where creative people can earn a living. So those of us wanting a family and a house …(you know, the “American Dream”) turn to advertising as a way to get paid to use our right brains."

It's a cornerstone of the reasoning that has me interested in entering into the ad industry in the first place, because I acknowledge that being creative rarely rewards creatives monetarily. I think it is something that should be examined more, and you seem to be the man with the knowledge.

I agree with Erik.

The main reason I ever got into advertising:

"...advertising is one of thew few careers where creative people can earn a living. So those of us wanting a family and a house ...(you know, the “American Dream”) turn to advertising as a way to get paid to use our right brains."

Writing is the only marketable skill I have, (other than performing manual labor). I need a writing gig so I can put food on the table. That's why I quit advertising (tired of getting laid off) and now work as an online content editor for a corporation's website. Online writing/content editing is one way copywriters can reinvent themselves today. These jobs are growing while adv jobs are shrinking. Word.

I predict that ad agency creatives are about to become the most valued minds in our new economy. The art-and-copy narrow-mindedness of the ad agency box is about to be blown open. I continue to admire you, Erik, for your continued attempt to shine a light on all that creatives have to offer beyond advertising.
