AdminErik: Alright everyone. I just mailed off my 4-figure COBRA payment. I’m ready for some chat therapy.

lisa (guest): greetings!

AdminErik: Also, this is going to be the last chat of the year. I’m going to be traveling and making merry and basically trying to forget 2008 ever happened.

Fouhy (guest): Whats up with you freelance gig? Still going?

lisa (guest): I’m doing a project for a client in Hong Kong. Can’t find a thing in the entire US.

Fouhy (guest): No, and things seem to be going dead quiet with the holidays

AdminErik: Sounds like Lisa’s on to something…when all else fails, look overseas.

lisa (guest): Any thoughts on whether Jan. will be looking up? I’m getting a whole lot of “maybes”

DMac: Got a freelance naming project. Nothing glamorous. Bread and butter never tasted so good.

AdminErik: I feel optimistic that with the new year, new budgets, and a new administration will come a little bit of new hiring.

AdminErik: But good isn’t just advertising good. It’s networking good. Self promoting good. Blogging good. And most of all, personality good.

lisa (guest): True! but the problem is, in a down economy it’s hard to feel as if you’re “good”.

AdminErik: Honestly, it was precisely because of that that I started PFTA. I didn’t want to feel defined by unemployment.

AdminErik: I know I can’t offer anyone jobs. But I can offer them a sense of community. And that’s important, IMO.

DMac: Create reachable goals. Attain them. Make more. And yes, I love those Survivorman-like tv shows. I think they translate well to the unemployment world

AdminErik: I think a lot of people feel like they can’t contribute because they’re working full time. Not true.

lisa (guest): Haven’t heard, what’s the scoop?

AdminErik: I will say this for my exit experience at Arnold. They told me on a Wednesday, and gave me until Friday to clean out my stuff at my own pace.

AdminErik: I took my computer home, copied all my important files to an external drive, and returned it on Friday.

DMac: Have friends there who got whacked. Some that didn’t. Talking with some of them, it sounded as if everyone was in the gallows.

Gio (guest): So I think I am about to be laid off too (I got the hint big and loud) and am dreading it cause it took me 6 mths to get this gig. Err. Erik – thanks for letting us vent.

AdminErik: Gio, be as general or as specific as you’d like…where are you? City? Agency (if you feel at liberty)?

Fouhy (guest): when you look for work overseas, how important is it to speak the language of the country?

lisa (guest): What I’m finding is that actually they want English speaking people.

AdminErik: I don’t have specific experience in that, but from what I’ve heard it’s not relly that important.

DMac: Lisa, how’d yo come about the gig? Did you have a connection a the agency?

AdminErik: I was told that it’s hard for non-english speaking agencies to market to english speaking ones. So they generally are on the lookout for talented americans.

lisa (guest): I’m working directly with the client. It’s a chain of shoe stores. A former client of mine in the US introduced us.

Gio (guest): Beantown but until it’s true gonna hold off for now. But there may be an ACD/Designer job here in Jan. Anyone interested? Small promotional company.

AdminErik: Gio…you can email me offline with the deets and I’ll post it on PFTA if you’d like.

DMac: Gotcha. Have some friends freelancing abroad. Makes me think I should get in touch with them.

lisa (guest): My strategy is to get in touch with *everybody*

Fouhy (guest): Dubai seems like a fantasy land

lisa (guest): I agree.

whaddup (guest): adminerik hi.

AdminErik: Here’s my take on 2009: I think niche/specialty shops are going to be primed for huge growth. (Assuming, of course, that their niche isn’t automotive, financial, or real estate.)

Anonymous (guest): hello

whaddup (guest): AdminErik

whaddup (guest): i think your work is incredible

whaddup (guest): i work at an agency in Cambridge

whaddup (guest): and we are really looking for a good writer

lisa (guest): Part of me wants to just open a 30 person agency with all the people who are out there unemployed.

DMac: I think that’s been on a lot of people’s minds, Lisa. It certainly crossed mine.

AdminErik: I’ll bet there are 30 client-side people who would like to open up their own business, too.

lisa (guest): I was thinking you could just get a group of cool people together. Build a website that just had links to everyone’s work. No overhead.

AdminErik: If we could pair unemployed clients with unemployed agency people, and find someone to finance the whole operation, it could be a pretty sweet venture.

Anonymous (guest): adminerik are you the one running this blog?

Anonymous (guest): thanks for doing this, it has helped to hear from other people.

Anonymous (guest): are you still freelancing

Anonymous (guest): congrats

Anonymous (guest): any advice how to get in there and land one

Anonymous (guest): nyc

Anonymous (guest): Ad

Anonymous (guest): it’s been rough

AdminErik: I wish there was a magic bullet. But the best thing you can do is be as creative as you can in your search. Blog. Network. Go to every function you can. And always, always, be working on your book. Especially from the interactive side…it’s officially a mandate to get work now.

lisa (guest): How are your web/interactive skills? that seems to be where the AD jobs are.

Anonymous (guest): Yea I have some interactive work in my portfolio

Anonymous (guest): Has anyone heard of a city that is best to get ad jobs

Anonymous (guest): or isn’t hurting as much

lisa (guest): I haven’t heard too much bad news from California.

Anonymous (guest): i just came from sf

lisa (guest): was it bad there?

Anonymous (guest): it’s rough out there too but I hear they just opened RGA there and hired a bunch of people

AdminErik: I will say this…I would strongly advise for everyone to get outside of their comfort zones when it comes to job searching. There are so many unknown agencies out there who are pining for the kind of talent that is on the streets these days.

Anonymous (guest): of course when I just left

Anonymous (guest): what do you mean by make yourself know to them?

lisa (guest): I agree. That’s why I was asking about the interactive. I will take projects for very little pay if they help me get more experience.

lisa (guest): Contact whoever you can at places

Anonymous (guest): oh I have, I’m sure they are getting bombarded

lisa (guest): Go to social networking sites — like this — and meet people

AdminErik: http://test.agencycompile.com/Default.aspx

lisa (guest): doesn’t matter

DMac: Email what I call mid-majors. Send them your site. I recently emailed agencies around the country wit my new site.

Anonymous (guest): definitely

lisa (guest): It’s so easy to just send a link of your work these days.

AdminErik: and don’t be embarrassed about who you talk to or where you get leads.

Anonymous (guest): it’s just the waiting that is awful

AdminErik: a friend of mine hooked me up with someone they met once who owned a small shop out in newburyport.

Anonymous (guest): oh wow

DMac: the waiting is awful, yes. But if you’re working on more and more leads, the waiting, i find, doesn’t seem as bad.

AdminErik: i wasn’t familiar with him or his shop. but that’s what i’m talking about when i say “make yourself known.”

AdminErik: it’s all about spreading your seed as far and as plentiful as possible.

dmc (guest): Does anyone use LinkedIn as a resource?

lisa (guest): I use LinkedIn a lot. And Facebook.

Anonymous (guest): yea when I google someone it usually takes me to linkedin

Anonymous (guest): the only thing is you can’t access their email unless you pay, but you can usually figure it out

SallyHogshead (guest): I use LinkedIn as a resource occasionally. I think that people are more likely to respond via LinkedIn and FB than regular emial

AdminErik: I agree. Somehow, that middle-man brings with it some networking savvy. It’s almost as if FB or LinkedIn are mutual friends making an introduction.

lisa (guest): I’ve also been trying to use my spare time to help other people out. Connect people with others where I think the fit would be good.

lisa (guest): good karma if nothing else.

SallyHogshead (guest): Lisa that is so great. It’s a karmic world

SallyHogshead (guest): jinx

Anonymous (guest): has anyone used creative circle?

lisa (guest): no, what is it?

SallyHogshead (guest): I’m looking at it now: http://www.creativecircle.com
var s0={};var s1={};s0.description=null;s0.descriptionHtml=null;s0.descriptionShortHtml=null;s0.externalId=null;s0.imageUrl=”http://images.chatroll.com/images/L/T/y/LTy9VE1TWYo-resizecrop_90x68.jpg”;s0.itemId=”0hCOrVWtkuU”;s0.itemType=1;s0.itemTypeVideo=false;s0.title=”Creative Circle – Creativity Starts Here”;s0.titleHtmlWbr=”Creative Circle -<wbr/> Creativity Starts Here”;s0.url=s1; s1.name=”http://www.creativecircle.com/”;s1.nameHtmlWbr=”www.creativecir<wbr/>cle.com/<wbr/>”; myObject={createdTime:new Date(1229456629000),groupId:”6rk3gv47CCB”,item:s0,userId:”OxNNH4FG6Ti”}

AdminErik: I haven’t, personally. But depending on the kind of work you’re after, it can be a good resource.

dmc (guest): Is that where you got your current fl project?

SallyHogshead (guest): Do any of you spend time on TwitteR?

Gio (guest): Hi there – had to step away for a few so missed answer to my question. Sorry. I also know we use TCG (the Creative Group) for freelance.

Anonymous (guest): Yea they send out emails almost every day which I apply to but never hear back. I wanted to see if anyone has heard back from them.

AdminErik: I haven’t embraced Twitter yet, Sally. Is there any benefit to that over facebook updates?

SallyHogshead (guest): There is something I notice about meeting and being in touch with people via FB and Twitter and the like–

lisa (guest): I tried Twitter but couldn’t get into the flow of it.

lisa (guest): But FB changed my life.

dmc (guest): How??

SallyHogshead (guest): you can develop a semi-relationship with them, so they are familiar with your name, and if you comment intelligently on what they’re doing, you can develop a sense of relaitonship

SallyHogshead (guest): I follow the poeple who are doing things I admire, whether creative directors or authors or bloggers, and then let them know when they say or do something that I find useful

lisa (guest): Oh, I see. promoting yourself through how you think, in a way.

SallyHogshead (guest): Well, what I have found is that by reaching out via social networking, over time, you make it MUCH more likely that the person is going to write you back

SallyHogshead (guest): so if you have a CD you want to work for, find out where he or she is linked on a site, and follow him or her. They may not respond, but they will notice

lisa (guest): You’re right. Because once people feel like they know you, they are much more likely to trust you

SallyHogshead (guest): EXACTLY!

SallyHogshead (guest): so you’re not just one in a million

Anonymous (guest): interesting I’l have to try that

SallyHogshead (guest): Also I think blogs like this one are brilliant way to stand out and demonstrate how you think

SallyHogshead (guest): Erik is a genius for doing this, because when someone is considering him for a job, he has a running account of the value he brings to the party

AdminErik: It’s like a multi-million dollar media buy that costs you nothing but your communication.

SallyHogshead (guest): bingo

Fouhy (guest): So do you become part of these peoples networks on the social sites?

Fouhy (guest): Or do you email contact them through the linkedin or facebook mail?

Gio (guest): You should send a link to Adweek – maybe get a little publicity.

SallyHogshead (guest): We’re all in the same boat, we all lack the resources to do the sort of self-promotion we might like… but we have creativity and we understand marketing… that can be leveraged for a tremendous advantage

SallyHogshead (guest): Gio — yes yes yes agreed

AdminErik: Thank you, Sally. I can honestly say, however, that my motivation for this site has as much (or more) to do with giving people a community as it does self promotion.

SallyHogshead (guest): I know, that shines through

SallyHogshead (guest): But, that is your personal brand!

Gio (guest): Ok so we should send to adweek as a thank you.

dmc (guest): Have you done several of these, Eric?

Anonymous (guest): I saw that Betsy Y would comment on the blog and thought that was so valuable to get advice from a recruiter’s perspective. Kuddos Erik.

AdminErik: I will not argue its promotional value. But I have turned down advertisers specifically because I don’t want this to become anything but honest and raw.

AdminErik: so far, this is the best one. so, thank you in advance to everyone who is contributing today!

AnonyMmous (guest): megan

SallyHogshead (guest): I just got back from a conference and I learned a lot of stuff about how to market myself (which is weird since I am in advertising) but the biggest thing I learned is the need to have a VERY clear and unique point of view on a blog or other consistent spot

dmc (guest): Are you getting a different group of people each time?

AnonyMmous (guest): oops, that wasn’t supposed to go there, sorry.

Gio (guest): Erik – will you post this on your blog. I missed a bunch.

TRad (guest): hello, I just been observing. Erik, this is great!

AdminErik: i think seth godin put it so perfectly when he said to speak to a very specific group of people instead of trying to talk to the masses.

Gio (guest): The transcript – or am I missing something?

SallyHogshead (guest): Maybe you could do a summary, Erik?

TRad (guest): is there a way that the chats are archived?

AdminErik: The other downside about unemployment is that you are your own IT department.

Anonymous (guest): haha true

Gio (guest): Another valuable skill

SallyHogshead (guest): Erik what is the best lesson you have learned PERSONALLY since you’ve been on the adventure known as unemployement?

AdminErik: Well, everyone…it’s about that time. I am going to be traveling for the hoidays so we won’t be chatting again until the New Year. 1/6/09 to be exact.

Gio (guest): Make sure you remind us on FB again. A few times.

AdminErik: This is no time to contemplate the merits of this or that opportunity.

SallyHogshead (guest): I love that. Such good energy. “Yes” begets more “yes.”

DMac: good go today erik. have a great holidays everyone! keep your collective chins up!

SallyHogshead (guest): Thank you for doing this Erik! You rock!

lisa (guest): Thanks all!!!

Anonymous (guest): Thanks Erik

dmc (guest): Thank, Erik. Can’t wait to see where this progresses to. Talk with you soon!!

RBofill (guest): its been awhile..Happy be back here, enjoi Holidays everyone!

Ad7am (guest): Erik? Hi. The full chat doesn’t seem to be available here.

Ad7am (guest): Scratch that. Found the Archives tab on the chatroll page.
