Chat Transcript – 12/16/08

Dec 16 2008, 7:00 PM
AdminErik: Alright everyone. I just mailed off my 4-figure COBRA payment. I’m ready for some chat therapy.
Dec 16 2008, 7:01 PM
lisa (guest): greetings!
Dec 16 2008, 7:01 PM
AdminErik: Also, this is going to be the last chat of the year. I’m going to be traveling and making merry and basically trying to forget 2008 ever happened.
Dec 16 2008, 7:01 PM
Fouhy (guest): Whats up with you freelance gig? Still going?
Dec 16 2008, 7:01 PM
AdminErik: Still going. Still no official offer.
Dec 16 2008, 7:02 PM
AdminErik: Thanks for asking.
Dec 16 2008, 7:02 PM
AdminErik: Any luck for anyone?
Dec 16 2008, 7:02 PM
lisa (guest): I’m doing a project for a client in Hong Kong. Can’t find a thing in the entire US.
Dec 16 2008, 7:03 PM
Fouhy (guest): No, and things seem to be going dead quiet with the holidays
Dec 16 2008, 7:03 PM
AdminErik: Sounds like Lisa’s on to something…when all else fails, look overseas.
Dec 16 2008, 7:03 PM
lisa (guest): Any thoughts on whether Jan. will be looking up? I’m getting a whole lot of “maybes”
Dec 16 2008, 7:04 PM
DMac: Got a freelance naming project. Nothing glamorous. Bread and butter never tasted so good.
Dec 16 2008, 7:04 PM
AdminErik: I feel optimistic that with the new year, new budgets, and a new administration will come a little bit of new hiring.
Dec 16 2008, 7:04 PM
DMac: I feel the same.
Dec 16 2008, 7:04 PM
AdminErik: Good people will find a way to stay busy.
Dec 16 2008, 7:05 PM
AdminErik: But good isn’t just advertising good. It’s networking good. Self promoting good. Blogging good. And most of all, personality good.
Dec 16 2008, 7:06 PM
lisa (guest): True! but the problem is, in a down economy it’s hard to feel as if you’re “good”.
Dec 16 2008, 7:06 PM
AdminErik: I think tolerance for assholes will be at an all time low in 2009.
Dec 16 2008, 7:06 PM
AdminErik: Yes, Lisa. True.
Dec 16 2008, 7:06 PM
AdminErik: You have to, though.
Dec 16 2008, 7:06 PM
DMac: I think that any small success is important. And you build off that.
Dec 16 2008, 7:07 PM
AdminErik: Honestly, it was precisely because of that that I started PFTA. I didn’t want to feel defined by unemployment.
Dec 16 2008, 7:07 PM
DMac: It’s like trying to survive in an extreme environment.
Dec 16 2008, 7:07 PM
AdminErik: So I would be defined as someone who embraced it instead.
Dec 16 2008, 7:08 PM
AdminErik: I know I can’t offer anyone jobs. But I can offer them a sense of community. And that’s important, IMO.
Dec 16 2008, 7:08 PM
DMac: Create reachable goals. Attain them. Make more. And yes, I love those Survivorman-like tv shows. I think they translate well to the unemployment world
Dec 16 2008, 7:09 PM
AdminErik: I think a lot of people feel like they can’t contribute because they’re working full time. Not true.
Dec 16 2008, 7:09 PM
AdminErik: So, you anon “guests” I’d love to hear from you.
Dec 16 2008, 7:10 PM
AdminErik: Or not.
Dec 16 2008, 7:10 PM
AdminErik: That’s cool too.
Dec 16 2008, 7:10 PM
AdminErik: It’s good to hear a couple of people are working a bit.
Dec 16 2008, 7:11 PM
AdminErik: Has anybody read about C-E’s layoff procedure in Detroit?
Dec 16 2008, 7:11 PM
AdminErik: So brutal.
Dec 16 2008, 7:11 PM
DMac: Holy cow!
Dec 16 2008, 7:11 PM
DMac: Way to take the human out of human resources.
Dec 16 2008, 7:11 PM
lisa (guest): Haven’t heard, what’s the scoop?
Dec 16 2008, 7:11 PM
AdminErik: I will say this for my exit experience at Arnold. They told me on a Wednesday, and gave me until Friday to clean out my stuff at my own pace.
Dec 16 2008, 7:12 PM
AdminErik: I took my computer home, copied all my important files to an external drive, and returned it on Friday.
Dec 16 2008, 7:12 PM
AdminErik: They were extremely cool about that part.
Dec 16 2008, 7:12 PM
DMac: Have friends there who got whacked. Some that didn’t. Talking with some of them, it sounded as if everyone was in the gallows.
Dec 16 2008, 7:14 PM
DMac: At least have some decency during a traumatic situation.
Dec 16 2008, 7:14 PM
AdminErik: Here is the news story on C-E.

Dec 16 2008, 7:14 PM
Gio (guest): So I think I am about to be laid off too (I got the hint big and loud) and am dreading it cause it took me 6 mths to get this gig. Err. Erik – thanks for letting us vent.
Dec 16 2008, 7:14 PM
DMac: I don’t know how they could eve spin this.
Dec 16 2008, 7:14 PM
AdminErik: Oh, please.
Dec 16 2008, 7:14 PM
AdminErik: The least I can do.
Dec 16 2008, 7:15 PM
AdminErik: Gio, be as general or as specific as you’d like…where are you? City? Agency (if you feel at liberty)?
Dec 16 2008, 7:17 PM
Fouhy (guest): when you look for work overseas, how important is it to speak the language of the country?
Dec 16 2008, 7:17 PM
lisa (guest): What I’m finding is that actually they want English speaking people.
Dec 16 2008, 7:18 PM
AdminErik: I don’t have specific experience in that, but from what I’ve heard it’s not relly that important.
Dec 16 2008, 7:18 PM
DMac: Lisa, how’d yo come about the gig? Did you have a connection a the agency?
Dec 16 2008, 7:19 PM
AdminErik: I was told that it’s hard for non-english speaking agencies to market to english speaking ones. So they generally are on the lookout for talented americans.
Dec 16 2008, 7:19 PM
lisa (guest): I’m working directly with the client. It’s a chain of shoe stores. A former client of mine in the US introduced us.
Dec 16 2008, 7:19 PM
Gio (guest): Beantown but until it’s true gonna hold off for now. But there may be an ACD/Designer job here in Jan. Anyone interested? Small promotional company.
Dec 16 2008, 7:19 PM
AdminErik: Cool, Gio. Thanks for sharing.
Dec 16 2008, 7:20 PM
AdminErik: Gio…you can email me offline with the deets and I’ll post it on PFTA if you’d like.
Dec 16 2008, 7:20 PM
DMac: Gotcha. Have some friends freelancing abroad. Makes me think I should get in touch with them.
Dec 16 2008, 7:20 PM
AdminErik: I keep hearing about Dubai.
Dec 16 2008, 7:21 PM
lisa (guest): My strategy is to get in touch with *everybody*
Dec 16 2008, 7:21 PM
AdminErik: Lots of expats going there to ride out the economy.
Dec 16 2008, 7:22 PM
Fouhy (guest): Dubai seems like a fantasy land
Dec 16 2008, 7:22 PM
lisa (guest): I agree.
Dec 16 2008, 7:22 PM
whaddup (guest): adminerik hi.
Dec 16 2008, 7:22 PM
AdminErik: Here’s my take on 2009: I think niche/specialty shops are going to be primed for huge growth. (Assuming, of course, that their niche isn’t automotive, financial, or real estate.)
Dec 16 2008, 7:23 PM
AdminErik: Bigger shops will keep losing billings to smaller ones
Dec 16 2008, 7:23 PM
Anonymous (guest): hello
Dec 16 2008, 7:23 PM
AdminErik: And smaller shops will keep taking the big’uns people.
Dec 16 2008, 7:23 PM
whaddup (guest): AdminErik
Dec 16 2008, 7:23 PM
AdminErik: Hi whaddup
Dec 16 2008, 7:24 PM
whaddup (guest): i think your work is incredible
Dec 16 2008, 7:24 PM
AdminErik: Hi Anonymous.
Dec 16 2008, 7:24 PM
whaddup (guest): i work at an agency in Cambridge
Dec 16 2008, 7:24 PM
whaddup (guest): and we are really looking for a good writer
Dec 16 2008, 7:24 PM
AdminErik: There are lots of us available
Dec 16 2008, 7:25 PM
lisa (guest): Part of me wants to just open a 30 person agency with all the people who are out there unemployed.
Dec 16 2008, 7:25 PM
AdminErik: Yup
Dec 16 2008, 7:25 PM
DMac: I think that’s been on a lot of people’s minds, Lisa. It certainly crossed mine.
Dec 16 2008, 7:25 PM
AdminErik: I’ll bet there are 30 client-side people who would like to open up their own business, too.
Dec 16 2008, 7:26 PM
lisa (guest): I was thinking you could just get a group of cool people together. Build a website that just had links to everyone’s work. No overhead.
Dec 16 2008, 7:26 PM
AdminErik: If we could pair unemployed clients with unemployed agency people, and find someone to finance the whole operation, it could be a pretty sweet venture.
Dec 16 2008, 7:26 PM
Anonymous (guest): adminerik are you the one running this blog?
Dec 16 2008, 7:26 PM
AdminErik: Lisa, that’s what I envisioned this becoming.
Dec 16 2008, 7:27 PM
AdminErik: I am.
Dec 16 2008, 7:27 PM
Anonymous (guest): thanks for doing this, it has helped to hear from other people.
Dec 16 2008, 7:27 PM
AdminErik: You’re very welcome.
Dec 16 2008, 7:27 PM
Anonymous (guest): are you still freelancing
Dec 16 2008, 7:27 PM
AdminErik: I am.
Dec 16 2008, 7:27 PM
Anonymous (guest): congrats
Dec 16 2008, 7:27 PM
AdminErik: thank you.
Dec 16 2008, 7:28 PM
Anonymous (guest): any advice how to get in there and land one
Dec 16 2008, 7:28 PM
AdminErik: Anonymous…where are you? What city?
Dec 16 2008, 7:28 PM
Anonymous (guest): nyc
Dec 16 2008, 7:30 PM
AdminErik: What do you do? Writer? AD? Production? AE? None of the above?
Dec 16 2008, 7:30 PM
Anonymous (guest): Ad
Dec 16 2008, 7:30 PM
Anonymous (guest): it’s been rough
Dec 16 2008, 7:31 PM
AdminErik: I wish there was a magic bullet. But the best thing you can do is be as creative as you can in your search. Blog. Network. Go to every function you can. And always, always, be working on your book. Especially from the interactive side…it’s officially a mandate to get work now.
Dec 16 2008, 7:31 PM
lisa (guest): How are your web/interactive skills? that seems to be where the AD jobs are.
Dec 16 2008, 7:31 PM
AdminErik: Great minds, Lisa…
Dec 16 2008, 7:32 PM
Anonymous (guest): Yea I have some interactive work in my portfolio
Dec 16 2008, 7:33 PM
AdminErik: that’s good.
Dec 16 2008, 7:33 PM
Anonymous (guest): Has anyone heard of a city that is best to get ad jobs
Dec 16 2008, 7:33 PM
Anonymous (guest): or isn’t hurting as much
Dec 16 2008, 7:33 PM
AdminErik: Someone was saying that Austin hasn’t felt it too bad yet.
Dec 16 2008, 7:33 PM
lisa (guest): I haven’t heard too much bad news from California.
Dec 16 2008, 7:33 PM
Anonymous (guest): i just came from sf
Dec 16 2008, 7:34 PM
lisa (guest): was it bad there?
Dec 16 2008, 7:34 PM
Anonymous (guest): it’s rough out there too but I hear they just opened RGA there and hired a bunch of people
Dec 16 2008, 7:34 PM
AdminErik: I will say this…I would strongly advise for everyone to get outside of their comfort zones when it comes to job searching. There are so many unknown agencies out there who are pining for the kind of talent that is on the streets these days.
Dec 16 2008, 7:34 PM
Anonymous (guest): of course when I just left
Dec 16 2008, 7:34 PM
AdminErik: You have to make yourself known to them.
Dec 16 2008, 7:35 PM
Anonymous (guest): what do you mean by make yourself know to them?
Dec 16 2008, 7:35 PM
lisa (guest): I agree. That’s why I was asking about the interactive. I will take projects for very little pay if they help me get more experience.
Dec 16 2008, 7:35 PM
lisa (guest): Contact whoever you can at places
Dec 16 2008, 7:35 PM
AdminErik: exactly
Dec 16 2008, 7:35 PM
Anonymous (guest): oh I have, I’m sure they are getting bombarded
Dec 16 2008, 7:35 PM
lisa (guest): Go to social networking sites — like this — and meet people
Dec 16 2008, 7:35 PM
AdminErik: One place to start is…
Dec 16 2008, 7:35 PM
AdminErik: http://test.agencycompile.com/Default.aspx

Dec 16 2008, 7:36 PM
lisa (guest): doesn’t matter
Dec 16 2008, 7:36 PM
DMac: Email what I call mid-majors. Send them your site. I recently emailed agencies around the country wit my new site.
Dec 16 2008, 7:36 PM
AdminErik: Login and do a search for the agencies in your metro area
Dec 16 2008, 7:36 PM
DMac: Use agencycompile.com. 1700 agencies listed there.
Dec 16 2008, 7:36 PM
AdminErik: there were hundreds of agencies i had never heard of
Dec 16 2008, 7:36 PM
Anonymous (guest): definitely
Dec 16 2008, 7:36 PM
lisa (guest): It’s so easy to just send a link of your work these days.
Dec 16 2008, 7:37 PM
AdminErik: and don’t be embarrassed about who you talk to or where you get leads.
Dec 16 2008, 7:37 PM
Anonymous (guest): it’s just the waiting that is awful
Dec 16 2008, 7:37 PM
DMac: Most have links to their site. See their work, find out who’s in charge.
Dec 16 2008, 7:37 PM
AdminErik: a friend of mine hooked me up with someone they met once who owned a small shop out in newburyport.
Dec 16 2008, 7:37 PM
AdminErik: I met him for coffee, and before you knew it, he gave me a project.
Dec 16 2008, 7:38 PM
Anonymous (guest): oh wow
Dec 16 2008, 7:38 PM
DMac: the waiting is awful, yes. But if you’re working on more and more leads, the waiting, i find, doesn’t seem as bad.
Dec 16 2008, 7:38 PM
AdminErik: i wasn’t familiar with him or his shop. but that’s what i’m talking about when i say “make yourself known.”
Dec 16 2008, 7:38 PM
AdminErik: it’s all about spreading your seed as far and as plentiful as possible.
Dec 16 2008, 7:39 PM
dmc (guest): Does anyone use LinkedIn as a resource?
Dec 16 2008, 7:39 PM
lisa (guest): I use LinkedIn a lot. And Facebook.
Dec 16 2008, 7:39 PM
AdminErik: Absolutely.
Dec 16 2008, 7:39 PM
Anonymous (guest): yea when I google someone it usually takes me to linkedin
Dec 16 2008, 7:40 PM
Anonymous (guest): the only thing is you can’t access their email unless you pay, but you can usually figure it out
Dec 16 2008, 7:40 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): I use LinkedIn as a resource occasionally. I think that people are more likely to respond via LinkedIn and FB than regular emial
Dec 16 2008, 7:42 PM
AdminErik: I agree. Somehow, that middle-man brings with it some networking savvy. It’s almost as if FB or LinkedIn are mutual friends making an introduction.
Dec 16 2008, 7:42 PM
lisa (guest): I’ve also been trying to use my spare time to help other people out. Connect people with others where I think the fit would be good.
Dec 16 2008, 7:42 PM
lisa (guest): good karma if nothing else.
Dec 16 2008, 7:42 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): Lisa that is so great. It’s a karmic world
Dec 16 2008, 7:42 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): jinx
Dec 16 2008, 7:42 PM
AdminErik: That is so, so important I think.
Dec 16 2008, 7:43 PM
Anonymous (guest): has anyone used creative circle?
Dec 16 2008, 7:43 PM
lisa (guest): no, what is it?
Dec 16 2008, 7:43 PM
AdminErik: the placement agency?
Dec 16 2008, 7:43 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): I’m looking at it now: http://www.creativecircle.com

Dec 16 2008, 7:43 PM
AdminErik: I haven’t, personally. But depending on the kind of work you’re after, it can be a good resource.
Dec 16 2008, 7:44 PM
dmc (guest): Is that where you got your current fl project?
Dec 16 2008, 7:44 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): Do any of you spend time on TwitteR?
Dec 16 2008, 7:44 PM
Gio (guest): Hi there – had to step away for a few so missed answer to my question. Sorry. I also know we use TCG (the Creative Group) for freelance.
Dec 16 2008, 7:44 PM
Anonymous (guest): Yea they send out emails almost every day which I apply to but never hear back. I wanted to see if anyone has heard back from them.
Dec 16 2008, 7:45 PM
AdminErik: I haven’t embraced Twitter yet, Sally. Is there any benefit to that over facebook updates?
Dec 16 2008, 7:45 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): There is something I notice about meeting and being in touch with people via FB and Twitter and the like–
Dec 16 2008, 7:46 PM
lisa (guest): I tried Twitter but couldn’t get into the flow of it.
Dec 16 2008, 7:46 PM
lisa (guest): But FB changed my life.
Dec 16 2008, 7:46 PM
dmc (guest): How??
Dec 16 2008, 7:46 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): you can develop a semi-relationship with them, so they are familiar with your name, and if you comment intelligently on what they’re doing, you can develop a sense of relaitonship
Dec 16 2008, 7:47 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): I follow the poeple who are doing things I admire, whether creative directors or authors or bloggers, and then let them know when they say or do something that I find useful
Dec 16 2008, 7:47 PM
AdminErik: It does seem more one-on-one than FB.
Dec 16 2008, 7:47 PM
lisa (guest): Oh, I see. promoting yourself through how you think, in a way.
Dec 16 2008, 7:48 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): Well, what I have found is that by reaching out via social networking, over time, you make it MUCH more likely that the person is going to write you back
Dec 16 2008, 7:48 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): so if you have a CD you want to work for, find out where he or she is linked on a site, and follow him or her. They may not respond, but they will notice
Dec 16 2008, 7:48 PM
lisa (guest): You’re right. Because once people feel like they know you, they are much more likely to trust you
Dec 16 2008, 7:49 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): EXACTLY!
Dec 16 2008, 7:49 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): so you’re not just one in a million
Dec 16 2008, 7:49 PM
Anonymous (guest): interesting I’l have to try that
Dec 16 2008, 7:49 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): Also I think blogs like this one are brilliant way to stand out and demonstrate how you think
Dec 16 2008, 7:49 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): Erik is a genius for doing this, because when someone is considering him for a job, he has a running account of the value he brings to the party
Dec 16 2008, 7:49 PM
AdminErik: It’s like a multi-million dollar media buy that costs you nothing but your communication.
Dec 16 2008, 7:49 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): bingo
Dec 16 2008, 7:50 PM
Fouhy (guest): So do you become part of these peoples networks on the social sites?
Dec 16 2008, 7:50 PM
Fouhy (guest): Or do you email contact them through the linkedin or facebook mail?
Dec 16 2008, 7:50 PM
Gio (guest): You should send a link to Adweek – maybe get a little publicity.
Dec 16 2008, 7:50 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): We’re all in the same boat, we all lack the resources to do the sort of self-promotion we might like… but we have creativity and we understand marketing… that can be leveraged for a tremendous advantage
Dec 16 2008, 7:51 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): Gio — yes yes yes agreed
Dec 16 2008, 7:51 PM
AdminErik: Thank you, Sally. I can honestly say, however, that my motivation for this site has as much (or more) to do with giving people a community as it does self promotion.
Dec 16 2008, 7:51 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): I know, that shines through
Dec 16 2008, 7:51 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): But, that is your personal brand!
Dec 16 2008, 7:51 PM
Gio (guest): Ok so we should send to adweek as a thank you.
Dec 16 2008, 7:51 PM
AdminErik: ha. i am flattered.
Dec 16 2008, 7:53 PM
dmc (guest): Have you done several of these, Eric?
Dec 16 2008, 7:53 PM
Anonymous (guest): I saw that Betsy Y would comment on the blog and thought that was so valuable to get advice from a recruiter’s perspective. Kuddos Erik.
Dec 16 2008, 7:53 PM
AdminErik: I will not argue its promotional value. But I have turned down advertisers specifically because I don’t want this to become anything but honest and raw.
Dec 16 2008, 7:54 PM
AdminErik: dmc…i have been hosting the chat weekly.
Dec 16 2008, 7:54 PM
AdminErik: so far, this is the best one. so, thank you in advance to everyone who is contributing today!
Dec 16 2008, 7:54 PM
AnonyMmous (guest): megan
Dec 16 2008, 7:54 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): I just got back from a conference and I learned a lot of stuff about how to market myself (which is weird since I am in advertising) but the biggest thing I learned is the need to have a VERY clear and unique point of view on a blog or other consistent spot
Dec 16 2008, 7:54 PM
dmc (guest): Are you getting a different group of people each time?
Dec 16 2008, 7:54 PM
AnonyMmous (guest): oops, that wasn’t supposed to go there, sorry.
Dec 16 2008, 7:55 PM
AdminErik: ha
Dec 16 2008, 7:55 PM
Gio (guest): Erik – will you post this on your blog. I missed a bunch.
Dec 16 2008, 7:55 PM
TRad (guest): hello, I just been observing. Erik, this is great!
Dec 16 2008, 7:55 PM
AdminErik: i think seth godin put it so perfectly when he said to speak to a very specific group of people instead of trying to talk to the masses.
Dec 16 2008, 7:56 PM
AdminErik: Gio…post what, specifically?
Dec 16 2008, 7:56 PM
Gio (guest): The transcript – or am I missing something?
Dec 16 2008, 7:57 PM
AdminErik: you mean all the posts from the chat today?
Dec 16 2008, 7:57 PM
SallyHogshead (guest): Maybe you could do a summary, Erik?
Dec 16 2008, 7:57 PM
AdminErik: I will, for sure.
Dec 16 2008, 7:57 PM
TRad (guest): is there a way that the chats are archived?
Dec 16 2008, 7:58 PM
AdminErik: I haven’t figured out how to do that. But I will.
Dec 16 2008, 7:58 PM
AdminErik: The other downside about unemployment is that you are your own IT department.
Dec 16 2008, 7:58 PM
Anonymous (guest): haha true
Dec 16 2008, 7:58 PM
Gio (guest): Another valuable skill
