New Chat software today. The one I typically use (Chatroll) is over capacity. They’ve let me down more than once so I might need to find a new permanent solution.
10:57 AdminErik 2 minutes until chat time.
11:00 AdminErik Hola everyone.
11:00 dianefaye Hello
11:00 AdminErik Now that vacation season is over, everyone is getting flooded with job offers right?
11:01 MattPFTA Good afternoon Erik
11:01 AdminErik Hi Matt. And welcome. (mattPFTA is our Sales Animal. He’s responsible for getting the job board filled with new positions.)
11:02 studionumber9 three cheers for matt!
11:02 MattPFTA haha, thanks studio
11:03 AdminErik So, my first question is, have you all registered for the beta? If so, I’d love to hear your feedback. If not, go to
http://beta.pleasefeedtheanimals.com
right now and get going!
11:04 dianefaye signing up now!
11:05 seanio signed up. so,… whoa, phone just rang. weird.
11:05 AdminErik seanio…haha. the power of pfta is amazing!
11:06 AdminErik Are you guys seeing a video window in your chat? I’m trying to get rid of it.
11:06 dianefaye Has anyone had any luck convincing an employer to let them work part-time in the office and part-time from home?
11:06 studionumber9 i’m in on the beta. i dig it.
11:06 seanio false alarm. but my pants have shipped and will be here tomorrow.
11:06 studionumber9 ha!
11:06 AdminErik diane – yes, if you’re freelance.
11:07 MattPFTA good news nonetheless
11:07 AdminErik seanio…damnit!
11:07 AdminErik but i am glad to hear that you won’t be pantless for when you do get an interview.
11:07 seanio diane: negative
11:08 AdminErik so, the way i thought i’d structure this chat today (loosely) is that we’d chat about the beta and Lemonade for the first half, then chat about freelance and full time jobs for the second half
11:09 dianefaye ok
11:09 studionumber9 real quickly: one piece of feedback ont he PFTA beta (which i didn’t notice till i needed it) was a forgot my log-in button (hmm)
11:10 AdminErik So, there are still a few kinks in the beta. Has anyone seen any bugs they’d like taken care of? Or notice any features that are missing that you wish were there?
11:10 AdminErik studio#9 – hmm, i thought that was addressed. let me check into that.
11:12 AdminErik wow, you’re right. i can’t seem to find it either.
11:12 AdminErik we had a ton of discussion about that in the IA phase. somehow it’s not in there on the beta. weird.
11:13 AdminErik anybody else have any functionality weirdness?
11:14 dianefaye I just signed-up so I’m not sure
11:14 AdminErik Come to think of it, it would be good to have an automatically generated email with login info as well.
11:14 studionumber9 most definitely
11:14 AdminErik That’s what beta is for!
11:17 AdminErik As for Lemonade, just heard from the editor. He’s going to have a rough cut done next week.
11:18 atslopes good job erik
11:18 AdminErik We’re trying to get the offline done by the Sundance late entry deadline, which is September 21st.
11:19 studionumber9 yah that’s fantastic. it looks great (visually not just content wise)
11:19 AdminErik Thanks much.
11:19 valerie Couple questions… how much will PFTA cost talent? and Where do you expect “Lemonade” to be showing?
11:19 AdminErik PFTA will cost talent nothing.
11:20 AdminErik Eventually there will be a Radiohead-esque “contribute what you think it’s worth.” But you will not be expected to pay anything.
11:20 Elephant The best things in life are free.
11:21 AdminErik And, Valerie, as for where Lemonade will show, the plan is for it to be 100% virtual. You will, hopefully, be able to watch it online.
11:21 Elephant I watched your trailer. It looks great so far.
11:21 valerie I wouldn’t mind paying for it in the theater. I just saw “Art & Copy” and it was GREAT!
11:22 AdminErik I’ve had a couple of conversations about distribution. But they seem to break down when I say “and it needs to be free and online.”
11:22 guest814017 Have you guys thought about improving SEO for the search term “pfta?”
11:22 AdminErik we def need better seo
11:22 AdminErik all around
11:23 AdminErik valerie, art © was wonderful. the DP who shot that also shot Lemonade.
11:23 valerie I’m excited to see “Lemonade”
11:24 AdminErik me too.
11:24 AdminErik it’s been in the hands of the editor for a few weeks now. i haven’t seen anything since the trailer.
11:24 studionumber9 what are the plans for the portfolio section of pfta? multimedia support or just statics and urls?
11:25 AdminErik multimedia.
11:25 AdminErik you’ll be able to embed video from places like vimeo and youtube.
11:25 AdminErik but i don’t have the storage/bandwidth to make it all native.
11:25 AdminErik not yet anyway.
11:26 studionumber9 i think that’s the way to do it anyway. upload once and spread.
11:26 studionumber9 perhaps even create pfta groups on those sites
11:26 AdminErik exactly
11:27 AdminErik And for Lemonade, people will be able to uploade their own “lemonade stories.”
11:27 AdminErik one lemonademovie.com.
11:28 studionumber9 oh and i just remembered one other piece of feedback for pfta profiles: for those of us spread out widely across the web it would be great to be able to add more than 3 links under our digital footprint
11:28 AdminErik i mean, ON
11:28 AdminErik ah, good point.
11:28 AdminErik how many?
11:29 studionumber9 well why limit it? perhaps just an “add another” button which creates another blank field
11:30 AdminErik Nice point.
11:30 AdminErik studio – you’re in Boston, no?
11:30 guest814017 I’d say at least 4- website, twitter, facebook, linkedin +whatever else
11:30 studionumber9 yup, just got back
11:30 guest814017 or have built in entries for those
11:31 AdminErik built in – great
11:34 guest814017 and is pfta going to be cross discipline?
11:34 AdminErik I’ve been reading more and more about the “jobless recovery.”
11:34 AdminErik cross discipline…meaning what?
11:35 AdminErik account service, creative, planning, etc?
11:35 guest814017 is it just for creatives, or will it also include account service and planning
11:35 guest814017 yes
11:35 AdminErik yes…cross discipline.
11:35 AdminErik not just for creeatives.
11:35 guest663358 why do we need that eric?
11:36 AdminErik Not sure if you caught it or not, but the blog is becoming about advertising at large, including a thursday column for account service.
11:36 AdminErik guest…why do we need what exactly?
11:38 guest663358 another job board for ad folks. can’t pfta be something different that is needed?
11:38 AdminErik The blog is going to start adhering to a more regular schedule. Check out http://www.pleasefeedtheanimals.com/2009/08/31/daily-scheduled-columns-events/
11:38 AdminErik guest…yes, you’re right. it needs to be different.
11:39 AdminErik And the job board is additional functionally.
11:39 guest663358 ???
11:39 AdminErik It won’t change the blog, or what drew everyone here in the first place.
11:40 valerie It feels different already because PFTA IS a community, not just trying to be one. What other job board continually asks your opinion?
11:40 AdminErik Valerie, that’s one difference. And something we try hard to maintain.
11:40 AdminErik In fact, the job board resulted from your opinions.
11:40 guest663358 hi valerie. a bunch. i get surveys and feedback forms from most of the ones i use regularly.
11:41 JBCopeland agreed. personally, i feel like other job sites fail to reach that truer sense of community b/c they haven’t really grown directly out of this industry.
11:41 valerie But do they chat with you every Tuesday?
11:41 AdminErik guest – the other difference between our job board and others is that we won’t be accepting jobs posted from head hunters.
11:42 guest663358 that’s good eric. no headhunters.
11:42 AdminErik so when you apply for a job, you do so directly. no middleman.
11:42 seanio very nice.
11:42 AdminErik it will be a hit financially for us, but i think it’s important to KNOW there’s a real job on the other end of that req.
11:42 studionumber9 that’s great. so how are you getting job listings?
11:42 pmack other job boards seem to add less of a community atmosphere. PFTA is more built on compassion and shared experiences. Something other sites don’t seem to offer
11:42 guest663358 jbcopeland, you ever hear of talentzoo?
11:43 AdminErik we have a Sales Animal. Matt Blake.
11:43 AdminErik And eventually we will be expanding our sales team.
11:44 JBCopeland plenty to learn from TZ. & they work hard, but to me it seems primarily made up of prior headhunters & HR folks.
11:44 JBCopeland no disrespect, but they only see the hiring process, not the job.. the life after the hire.
11:44 AdminErik PFTA will always be about us, the Animals. We are talent focused instead of agency focused.
11:45 guest663358 well i went to the cirecus and they were next to us and they are mostly ad folks i think. good shops too.
11:46 guest663358 not sure what you mean jb.
11:46 AdminErik And, here’s where the future of PFTA lies…we will be taking steps for y’all to do for yourselves. There will always be opportunities for you to work for other people. But we can be the most help in helping you sustain yourself.
11:46 seanio it would be interesting to enable comments from regis. users on job posts if poster so desires.. approval required, of course.
11:47 AdminErik seanio…what kind of comments?
11:48 seanio general. for instance, i just noticed a 20k salary in NY/SF. i might say, that seems a bit low to the poster for clarification. at that point, we’ve started a convo between agency/candidate before even getting a call
11:48 seanio good comments get good interaction with employer
11:48 AdminErik good pont.
11:48 AdminErik point
11:48 seanio avoid the black hole
11:49 studionumber9 great idea
11:49 AdminErik as a note of clarification, they posted that job when we didn’t have the “commensurate” option in the salary range
11:49 AdminErik but your point is well taken
11:49 seanio ah… gotcha…
11:50 AdminErik question for the room….
11:50 AdminErik if you had a great job offer in the middle of a 4 week freelance project, would you take it?
11:51 seanio assuming we have to drop project in the middle?
11:51 valerie Oh Hell-to-the-yes! Work that freelance project too and pay off some of my debt.
11:52 AdminErik I’m prodding you to consider (perhaps reconsider) your core values. Is working for someone else better than working for yourself?
11:52 studionumber9 i think it depends on both. if its a project i really believe in and want to spend all my day working on i’d see if there was flexibility in the start date. or see if i could slide the freelance.
11:53 seanio i tend to prefer having a group around. so on that point, i’d go fulltime.
11:53 AdminErik There’s no doubt that the economy is shifting to free agency model.
11:53 valerie In reality, no matter where we work, we’re really working for ourselves…
11:53 dianefaye I would stick with my freelance
11:54 studionumber9 i get satisfaction out of both. there are projects i love working on that there’s no way i could tackle myself, i need a group. but there are also projects i want to handle soup to nuts.
11:54 seanio so, if crispin called, you’d decline?
11:54 AdminErik Agencies are falling over trying to adopt the StrawberryFrog model…lean full time staff and contract talent by the project.
11:54 AdminErik seanio, absolutely.
11:54 seanio hahaha…
11:54 AdminErik Seriosuly.
11:54 seanio I know. I’ve heard.
11:55 seanio Youngins will drop anything for a big name here (SF). GSP, etc.
11:55 AdminErik That’s not to say everyone else should or would. I’m just asking the basic question, whether or not people are still in “employee” mode or “self employed”mode.
11:55 valerie You forgot “survival” mode…
11:56 AdminErik Because, for me, once I got a taste of working for myself, it made it hard to picture a full time job I’d take.
11:56 dianefaye The freelance gigs are here and loyal, I remain loyal to them. If I am able to work full-time and freelance … that’s the best
11:57 AdminErik Thank you, thank you everyone for participating in the chat. I love the energy here.
11:57 AdminErik And thank you for your feedback about the beta. Keep notes and send them to me. Or wait for next week’s chat.
11:58 AdminErik Same time, same place.
11:58 seanio thanx erik, good idea. enjoyed it. cheers.
11:58 AdminErik In the meantime, pass along
to everyone you know. It’s almost up to 100k views!
11:59 studionumber9 thanks erik
12:00 AdminErik Ciao everyone. Come back next Tuesday.
