AdminErik: Good afternoon everybody (good morning if you’re on the West coast.)
AdminErik: This is going to be pretty informal. No agenda. It’s just been a while since we did one of these, and I wanted to get back on it.
AdminErik: Thought I’d answer any questions you might have about the beta site or Lemonade or anything else.
AdminErik: And give us all a chance to reconnect again.
AdminErik: So, has anyone had a chance to play around with http://beta.pleasefeedtheanimals.com ?
Fouhy (guest): I have, I was curious if I did something wrong, when I view my profile I don’t see my resume anywhere

AdminErik: Did you physically upload it?
Fouhy (guest): yeah, PDF, when I go into the edit profile page it looks like it is there

AdminErik: This is good to know. I’ll run it by Skookum.
pmack: I’ve had a chance to create a profile. Not much else, sadly
Fouhy (guest): Cool, otherwise it is looking sweet!

AdminErik: pmack….it won’t let you? or you haven’t had the chance yet.
pmack: oh, just haven’t had an opportunity
pmack: really like what I’ve seen though. Didn’t run in to any issues
AdminErik: fouhy, i just checked out your profile. you’re right. there’s nowhere to download your resume. i’ll look into it.
Guest161 (guest): Hi Erik – any updates on companies that will be posting jobs yet?

Fouhy (guest): thanks

AdminErik: guest161…the job board was launched at the same time as the rest of the site. hiring companies want to know that i have lots of viewers and great talent (which i do). so the jobs section lags behind the talents section.
AdminErik: we have a couple of sales people who are making it happen. all i can say is “soon.”
pmack: that’ll be a great addition
Guest161 (guest): Look forward to it and the site is great.

AdminErik: thank you. still some bugs (like fouhy mentioned). and there are some UI issues that we couldn’t have anticipated until some live version happened.
AdminErik: but otherwise, it’s pretty close.
AdminErik: also, the portfolio section should happen in the next couple of weeks.
AdminErik: the other thing you guys should know is that these chats will be a weekly thing again.
AdminErik: over and above “announcements” and news, it’s just a way for us to stay connected and share things we know. stories we’ve heard. job leads and whatnot.
Shea: What are you envisioning for the portfolio section? I would imagine a lot of people would only need a link to their personal sites.
AdminErik: shea, it will be in the world of krop.com
AdminErik: Krop is pretty sweet. Really slick.
AdminErik: But ours will be free.
AdminErik: And not really much you won’t be able to do.
AdminErik: If you have video, you’ll have to embed from another source like youtube or vimeo, but otherwise it will be fully funcitoning.
Shea: nice
AdminErik: And, you can still link to your site if you’d rather not upload your book on pfta.
AdminErik: Have you all had a chance to check out the lemonade trailer?
AWolk: What’s the latest on the movie? Trailer got lots of props, what are next steps?
AWolk: jinx
Guest666 (guest): Yeah Erik I saw the trailer, looks great!

AdminErik: Awolk…thanks for joining. I just got off the phone with the editor. He’s shooting to have a rough cut in the next 1-2 weeks.
AdminErik: I originally told him that it would be a “short” short, in the strictest sense. 10 minutes or so. But then we shot 60 hours of footage.
AdminErik: So it’s taking longer than anyone anticipated, especially when you consider that this is being done is everyone’s spare time.
AWolk: What’s the plan once it’s done? You just going to have it up online or you going to try and get some live screenings going?
JBCopeland: I’m curious if you’ll address portfolio suggestions for non-creatives.. what’s good to show? what matters?
AdminErik: JBCopeland..man, I’m glad you asked that.
AdminErik: Graig..uncool.
CraigElimeliah (guest): ? isnt this a chat for out of work ad profs?

AdminErik: Craig, I mean.
AdminErik: Yes.
AdminErik: But theres a job board.
CraigElimeliah (guest): just contributing a message i got today

CraigElimeliah (guest): ahhh didnt realize

CraigElimeliah (guest): apologies

BenjaminGSmith: Love the beta, keep it up!
AdminErik: Are you from Akqa?
CraigElimeliah (guest): nope im not

CraigElimeliah (guest): Freedom + Partners

BenjaminGSmith: I applied to AKQA, still waiting to hear back
AWolk: Erik- need to jump off- we’ll talk soon. This is a great idea (chat)
CraigElimeliah (guest): but a friend wanted to spread the word

AdminErik: gotcha.
CraigElimeliah (guest): a lot of my agency clients reach out to me for positions they need to fill

AdminErik: it read like spam for a second
CraigElimeliah (guest): nope not spam

CraigElimeliah (guest): just a lead

AdminErik: go ahead and repost if you want…
CraigElimeliah (guest): where abouts?

AdminErik: here.
BenjaminGSmith: I want to read the part about out of state
CraigElimeliah (guest): New York: send resum to NYJobs@AKQA.com
Senior Communications Planner
Associate Media Director
Account Director
Account Executive
Sr. Art Director
Art Director
Designer & Interaction Designer

Sr. Web Developer (front end)
Flash Developer

AdminErik: i thought you were trying to take over the chat with ad spam.
CraigElimeliah (guest): ahhh no sorry

BenjaminGSmith: applied to the NY for Flash Developer too
AdminErik: so, AKQA is hiring everybody.
CraigElimeliah (guest): apparently

MattBlake: Can he post these on the job board?
CraigElimeliah (guest): they must have gotten a new account

AdminErik: yes. PLEASE!
CraigElimeliah (guest): where is the job board?

AdminErik: needs to register on beta.pleasefeedtheanimals.com
AdminErik: what’s his name?
CraigElimeliah (guest): beta site is down

CraigElimeliah (guest): /nfs/c05/h02/mnt/73814/domains/beta.pleasefeedtheanimals.com/library/shelf/kohana/modules/curl/libraries/Curl.php [328]:

AdminErik: (matt…pay attention)
MattBlake: haha, noted…
AdminErik: craig…
AdminErik: working for me
CraigElimeliah (guest): not here

CraigElimeliah (guest): i posted the error

AdminErik: hmm
AdminErik: still happening when you refresh?
JBCopeland: I’m seeing it as well. Happens upon login.
AdminErik: one thing i know is that most browsers keep things in the cache forever now. especially mozilla/firefox
AdminErik: ugh. really/
AdminErik: it’s not happening for me
CraigElimeliah (guest): ya but i refreshed and got it

CraigElimeliah (guest): brown site…

CraigElimeliah (guest): ok working now

AdminErik: i’m using mediatemple, which only lets a certain number of people click simultaneously.
CraigElimeliah (guest): but when i go to job board i just see ”
Your search terms:
No results.”

AdminErik: that’s right. it’s brand new.
AdminErik: akqa could be the first.
MattBlake: you’ll kick it off with a splash of jobs
AdminErik: it’s free for now…during the beta.
MattBlake: we still need to get the salary range option taken care of in case thats not something the employer wants to post
AdminErik: yeah.
AdminErik: Everyone…Matt Blake is our Sales Animal, btw.
MattBlake: Nice to meet you all virtually
tedV (guest): how are agencies reacting to the site?

MattBlake: I have had a pretty good response from the early contact I have made, but we started with people who are familiar with us
AdminErik: Ted, our agency push is just getting underway.
tedV (guest): yeah, i figured, I’m glad to hear the agency folks are into it too.

tedV (guest): how about folks on the chat, have you all signed up? kicked the tires?

AdminErik: Any other bugs or crash issues from folks?
BenjaminGSmith: yup
Guest161 (guest): Just curious how these listings will be different/better than indeed, talentzoo, craigslist, monster. etc…?

AdminErik: Oh…tedV! I just put 2 and 2 together. Ted was the producer/project manager/wireframe afficianado on the new site.
AdminErik: talentzoo – all jobs all the time. no community, no portfolio section.
tedV (guest): hi!

AdminErik: craigslist/monster – not about our industry.
AdminErik: we’d be lucky to get 1/10th of the listings that talentzoo has. but in the bigger sense, PFTA is about more than just pumping jobs at you. I think most people who have been involved so far know that it is as much about moving ahead in your life and career goals as it is about getting another job.
AdminErik: that’s why i’m making “lemonade” after all.
tedV (guest): i think the community piece is really important, and the ad biz focus as well. i’ve viewed this as a much more personal job hunting experience, but one that let’s you know you’re still part of a community

carolt: you don’t think talent zoo has community?
Guest530 (guest): speaking of career goals. i wanted to ask you folks with some senior agency experience for some off the cuff advice. i am currently at a small agency, and have been here for a little less than a year. my old agency is looking to hire me back and has made me an ok offer. have any of you ever gone back and forth from an agency and what did you think when you did?

dylanwrites (guest): This is my first time making it to a live chat here. Finally, I’ll be a part of the transcript instead of reading it later.

AdminErik: carolt – does it?
carolt: imo they have great community. maybe it’s just me but i’ve been on their site for years and it seems like they get us and do a lot for us.
carolt: it does to me erik.
AdminErik: guest 530 – there’s no harm in being hired back. if it’s a place you want to be. but i wouldn’t just chase the money.
MattBlake: Thats really what matters then Carolt
AdminErik: carolt…i agree with matt. community is different for everyone. my experience has been mostly that they’re about jobs and jobs only. but that’s MY experience. different for everyone.
AdminErik: welcome dylan. good to have you!
MattBlake: I think its a little more implicit sense of community over there, where we’re trying to foster that relationship on this board
tedV (guest): @guest530 I’d also ping some of your connections back there about their outlook. how’s the pipeline. if they’re hiring things are probably pretty good, but see if you can get some inside baseball info.

tedV (guest): @carolt talentzoo seems to have good content, definitely, but I can’t say I go there to interact with content

carolt: i appreciate what you’re saying, but i recommend you think about partnering with them. have you talked with them?
AdminErik: I haven’t. But, you know, they’re goliath. I’d like there to be some room for us Davids.
AdminErik: And give everyone a choice of experiences.
AdminErik: A couple of other little notes for everyone…
carolt: rick myers is a neat guy and loves to help ad people. seems he is always helping folks. saw him talk last year. you should ring him.
AdminErik: One other major difference between PFTA and any other job site is that headhunters will not be permitted to post jobs on the site.
AdminErik: So, when you apply for something, you’ll know you’re applying for an actual job.
tedV (guest): that’s part of the cool personalized nature of the experience.

AdminErik: Another thing…I was recently interviewed by John January on American Copywriter. I have always been a big fan of that show so it was a huge honor to be on it. Check it out here: http://americancopywriter.typepad.com/blog/2009/08/ac-63-now-available.html
Guest274 (guest): very cool!

AdminErik: And last little bit of promotional selfishness…I’m sending regular updates about “Lemonade” to the subscribers. It would be awesome if you signed up on http://lemonademovie.com
AdminErik: got about 5 minutes left. Anyone have any thoughts? Questions? Hate mail?
AdminErik: This was all very last minute, but as I said I’m going to be doing these regularly. As one guest said, it looks like AKQA is hiring like mad. So check them out if you haven’t yet.
Guest161 (guest): Just a thought..maybe next time we have some specific topics to chat about…

GuestRadcliffe (guest): Hello Proulx & company!

GuestRadcliffe (guest): I’m joining late, but still wanted to see what the party was like…

Guest161 (guest): Surviving month number 6 of unemployment

Guest161 (guest): etc…

deeNile: yea, I missed the party too. will have to read the transcripts.
AdminErik: guest161 – you’re right. this was just thrown together last minute. i wanted to mostly be able to answer people’s questions about the beta site, which we did in the first half of the chat.
tedV (guest): thanks Erik! love the chat functionality, gonna steal it and reco it to a client! see you round.

GuestRadcliffe (guest): Right. I messed around with it a bit, Erik, but it seemed like most of the functionality was still not up yet, right?

AdminErik: haha
GuestRadcliffe (guest): (Didn’t want to judge it while still not fully up…)

AdminErik: the only thing that’s missing en masse is the portfolio section.
Guest190 (guest): Question, Erik have you gotten any offers to work in advertising agency since the success of PFTA? And if so, what was your answer?

Guest190 (guest): I dont know if this question has been asked already. If so, I apologize

AdminErik: the job board is fnctioning but empty at the moment. that’ll change quickly.
GuestRadcliffe (guest): right, the job board was down, I noticed.

AdminErik: guest190 – yes. and i’ve turned them down for now.
GuestRadcliffe (guest): FWIW, I missed being able to see the latest blog right there on the home page. (that’s gone from the new design, right?)

Guest190 (guest): Cool. I see. So what do you see as the long term goal of the site? Say for example, the economy improves.

Guest190 (guest): and people start getting their jobs back?

AdminErik: radcliffe – it’ll be an RSS feed (better than the one that’s there now.) so at least you’ll be able to read the headlines. people will have to transfer their rss readers to the new url.
AdminErik: guest190…there are plans. secret ones.
GuestRadcliffe (guest): Right.

GuestRadcliffe (guest): And Erik, re: AKQA. Were you talking about NYC?

AdminErik: not sure. someone listed all the jobs they have open right now. i’ll post the transcripts in a bit so you can see what they said.
AdminErik: alright everybody. gotta chat. thanks for joining on such short notice. come back next week!
Guest190 (guest): SECRET! Alright, well I respect if you want to keep something secret. So has the success of the site been felt outside of US? Im from Canada and Ive heard about it.

AdminErik: did i say “gotta chat?”
AdminErik: what’s wrong with me?
AdminErik: i meant, “gotta bolt.”
AdminErik: talk to you then.
Guest190 (guest): k bye!
